Allen's comments on SBC sexual abuse lawsuits ignite a firestorm on social media
David L. Allen, a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) presidential candidate, addressed the 42 sex abuse lawsuits against Southern Baptist entities, referring to them as “a distraction” from the gospel during his speech at Valleydale Church in Pelham, according to AL.com and other media reports.
Allen’s public expression of concern about the financial impact of the sex abuse lawsuits on the SBC’s Executive Committee – describing it as a heavy drain on the organization – ignited a firestorm on social media.
In his sermon, Allen emphasized the need to refocus on missions, evangelism, preaching the gospel, and church planting, stating that addressing distractions such as the sex abuse lawsuits is important but should not overshadow the main focus.
While Allen’s friend Mac Brunson, pastor of Valleydale, defended his comments, many others voiced concern.
