Church leaders and Christian influencers have expressed their opinions on the verdict of former President Donald Trump, who was found guilty of 34 felony charges related to falsifying business records by a largely liberal New York jury.
Trump called the trial “a scam” and the “hush money” trial, which centered on Trump paying off porn star Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about their sexual encounter. Trump’s defense team said the former president plans to appeal all 34 counts of his conviction.
Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, questioned the fitness of the legal system and asked followers to pray for America.
“Our country is at a crossroads. What we saw today has never happened before, and I think for the majority of Americans, it raises questions about whether our legal system can be trusted,” Graham said. “Pray for our nation, for God‘s guiding hand that this republic will be one nation under God with liberty and justice for all,” said Graham.
Jonathan Merritt, a popular faith and culture writer and “gay progressive Christian,” wrote, “I’m very clearly no fan of Donald Trump, but I also don’t want to live in a world where every president leaves office only to face a pile of lawsuits and indictments. We are dangerously close to living in that world.”
