Progressive evangelical Christians held a 56-minute virtual press conference Sept. 9 to call for a broader understanding of evangelicalism, rejecting political idolatry and false idols of power, wealth, and strength.
The group is urging like-minded evangelicals to sign a Confession of Evangelical Conviction. The new confession states it rejects the false belief that “God has anointed anyone other than Jesus Christ as Savior.”
Signers include Russell Moore, former president of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and frequent critic of former President Donald Trump, and Richard Mouw, a theologian and former president of the liberal Fuller Theological Seminary. The Church of God in Christ and Progressive National Baptist Convention have also endorsed the confession.
The group has developed numerous resources including worship music, Bible studies via InterVarsity, and other tools for pastors and churches including a Pastors Civic Renewal Toolkit.
