SBC's Mohler makes liberal ‘False Prophets’ list, issues warning to Trump on abortion
Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., has been named to Faithful America’s 2024 “False Prophets” Hall of Fame.
This is the third annual list from the liberal advocacy group as part of its “False Prophets Don't Speak for Me” campaign. Mohler is one of the most prominent and longest-serving leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), and according to Faithful America, underscored the Christian nationalist talking point that God saved former President Donald Trump from assassination for a divine purpose. He has also tried to point fingers at President Joe Biden for circumstances that led to the attempted assassination of Trump.
Faithful America cited a long list of qualifications for Mohler’s inclusion in the hall of fame, which includes being one of the most prominent and longest-serving leaders of the SBC. Mohler has also said Christians must vote for Republicans to be faithful, as they have a responsibility to make certain that Christians understand the stewardship of the vote.
Additionally, Faithful America said Mohler has a deeply anti-Catholic track record by stating that the Roman church is a false church and the pope holds a false and unbiblical office. He has also endorsed hate-filled and harmful anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, according to Faithful America. Mohler has called for women who obtain abortions to be jailed and was behind the SBC annual meeting resolution opposing in-vitro fertilization.
Karli Wallace Thompson of Faithful America said that political and religious leaders alike use Christian rhetoric to undermine democracy and promote an extremist Christian nationalist agenda that is counter to Jesus’ teachings of love, peace, and justice. Thompson said it is imperative to expose “these wolves in sheep’s clothing” to protect the true essence of our faith and our futures.
Other religious leaders named to the False Prophets list include Franklin Graham, Tony Perkins, Joseph Strickland, and Sean Feucht. Trump is a past political figure honoree that includes Greg Abbott, Lauren Boebert, Doug Mastriano, Marjorie Taylor Green, Josh Hawley, Mike Johnson, Ron DeSantis, and Myra Flores.
Mohler Issues Warning to Trump
Mohler recently raised concerns about Trump’s positions on issues like abortion and in vitro fertilization (IVF), saying it could cost him vital evangelical support.
The SBC leader’s comments came in response to recent statements from Trump on Truth Social, where he said his administration would be “great for women and their reproductive rights.”
In April, Trump refused to endorse a national abortion ban, saying it should be up to individual states. In 2020, he said he wanted to overturn federal protections for the procedure and would support a near-total ban.
In an interview with The New York Times, Mohler explained why statements from Trump saying his administration would require insurers to cover IVF may alienate loyal voters.
Mohler said Trump’s inconsistency over the issue could be his undoing in the upcoming election.
He is “basically daring the pro-life movement to turn on him,” Mohler said of Trump’s comments on Truth Social.
Referencing inconsistencies from Trump’s previous presidential campaigns, Mohler added “I have no idea what Donald Trump really believes about abortion.”
“I believe nothing less than the sacredness and dignity of human life is at stake,” Mohler said, adding that younger evangelical voters are now showing less enthusiasm for the Republican presidential candidate than in previous election bids.
