The biblical perspective on abortion
While the Bible does not explicitly address abortion, it provides foundational principles that guide our understanding of life, compassion, and moral responsibility.
From former President Donald Trump releasing a new position on abortion, Arizona’s highest court voting to revive a 160-year-old ban on abortion, to President Biden endorsement of abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy up until birth, the debate surrounding abortion has never been stronger.
While the Bible does not explicitly mention the word “abortion,” it provides principles and insights that inform discussions on this topic.
Here are some key points to consider:
Human Life and God’s Image – The Bible emphasizes that human life is sacred and created in the image of God (Latin, imago dei). Genesis 1:27 states, “So God created mankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This foundational truth underscores the inherent value of every human being, even before birth. Psalm 139:13-16 beautifully expresses this idea: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Prophets and Apostles Called from the Womb – The Bible highlights instances where significant figures were called to their sacred tasks even before birth. The prophet Jeremiah, for example, received his divine calling while still in the womb: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). The Apostle Paul also recognized God’s purpose for his life from the womb (Galatians 1:15).
The Sanctity of Life – While the Bible does not explicitly address abortion, it consistently condemns the taking of innocent life. The Sixth Commandment states, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Abortion, viewed as the deliberate termination of a pregnancy, raises ethical questions about the sanctity of life. Christians grapple with balancing compassion for the mother with reverence for the unborn child.
Compassion and Grace – The Bible emphasizes compassion, grace, and forgiveness. Jesus showed love and understanding toward those hurting or caught in difficult situations. As believers, we are called to extend compassion to women facing unplanned pregnancies, recognizing their struggles and providing support. The church should be a place of grace and healing.
Christian Perspectives – It’s essential to acknowledge that Christian perspectives on abortion vary widely. Different denominations interpret biblical principles differently. We believe that Christians should advocate for a pro-life stance, emphasizing the sanctity of life from conception. While others may emphasize compassion and personal choice due to the complexities of the issue, it is our conviction that life should be protected at all costs – both for the baby and the mother.
The Bible provides Christians with foundational principles that guide our understanding of life, compassion, and moral responsibility. As believers, we should seek wisdom, and exhibit empathy and grace as we engage in conversations with others about this sensitive issue.
I consider myself to be pro-life. But when a baby developing within a woman's body is dead, or not capable of reaching viability, or ectopic which would result in the death of the mother due to complications, she should have access to medical care. And she should be able to have that care without threats of prosecution to herself and her medical team. The miscarriage rate in the U.S. is reported to be from 15 to over 30 percent. Texas and a growing number of states don't appear to recognize it but there's a difference between elective abortion and spontaneous abortion.
I understand that the 160 year old law the Arizona supreme court upheld also puts the age of sexual consent for a woman at ten. Can I get an amen for that as it relates to your daughter? Hopefully not.
And donald trump will have a new position on anything that he thinks will get him more votes.
