Pastors applaud – and rebuke – the intersection of faith and politics in the 2024 election campaign
“How in the world could pastors and Christians complain about the potential president of the United States encouraging Americans to read the Bible?"
In 2024, the intersection of faith and politics is evident in various forms, from a messianic video claiming God gave former President Donald Trump to save the American dream to some comparing Trump to Jesus Christ.
CBN News recently covered the topic in “Critics Blast 'Blasphemous' Religious Imagery on the 2024 Campaign Trail” (click above to watch).
Trump, who was not a regular churchgoer or a person of deep faith, is now incorporating religion into his re-election bid for the White House. The former president is emphasizing the need to bring Christianity back into our lives and into what will be again a great nation, said Jackson Laymeyer of Pastors4Trump, a group supporting Trump.
Trump began promoting the sale of the “God Bless the USA” Bible, which includes the founding father documents, leading up to Easter. Pastors and Christians applauded the message, but the Trump-endorsed Bible, which sells for $59.99, has drawn rebuke.
Laymeyer believes the religious themes are appropriate for this spiritual battle Americans face.
“The religious themes I think are very appropriate because this is a very spiritual battle,” Laymeyer told CBN News. “How in the world could pastors and Christians complain about the potential president of the United States encouraging Americans to read the Bible? That's what all of us pastors want,” he said.
Pastor Loran Livingston of Central Church in Charlotte, N.C. recently preached a viral sermon condemning Trump for selling Bibles.
As a person fascinated by history, I find it stupefying how many people today want to keep politics and religion apart from each other.
If Christ is truly lord and master of all of our life, then he is lord and master over our politics.
I have yet come in contact with any Christian who supports President Trump, who does not also see his flaws. He is very far from perfect, but so is the rest of us sinners who have been saved by grace.
The cost of his Bible does not concern me; no one is being coerced or forced to do so.
But for those who may purchase it, it might lead that person to delve into the story of Jesus Christ.
Much of what I have written here also applies to President Biden, as well. We are commanded by God’s Word to pray for all people who are in position over us.
“Let those who are without sin cast the first stone.”
