The 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) is set to begin today in Chicago. The party has gone through a tumultuous four weeks since President Joe Biden left the race for a second term due to health concerns and cognitive decline.
Biden was replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presumptive nominee after he withdrew his candidacy on July 21. In opposition to many DNC leaders, Biden and his handlers complicated matters when he endorsed Harris ahead of efforts for an open convention with multiple members of the party vying for the party’s nomination, according to published reports. Harris has chosen as her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
In addition to questions about the party’s candidate, the DNC faces concerns about Palestinian protesters who have vowed to disrupt the convention in Chicago, the site of anti-war riots and clashes between demonstrators and police during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. In 1968 the convention was disrupted after incumbent President Lyndon Johnson pulled out of the race opening the door for Vice President Hubert Humphrey to become the party’s nominee.
